Pregnancy pillow

Updated: Apr 17, 2020

Z and I are currently in San Diego (and then LA for the second half of the week) for our last hurrah (aka “babymoon”) before we are stuck with a newborn this summer lol. As we are both serious foodies, we officially embarked on this trip with the goal of fulfilling all of our cravings we sorely lack in the midwest. I hope to post about our babymoon shortly after the trip is over to report on places we visited (for sightseeing) and ate after an extensive list of recommendations from friends and our own research. For now, let us indulge on our day of 2 food-coma. 🤣

I do want to post a product review of a pillow that has quickly become one of the family’s favorite, even though the original intent was solely for my use. Early into the second trimester, I learned that I would eventually need to sleep on my side and particularly on the left side. Since I’ve always been back sleeper, when I first tried sleeping on my side, I felt like my whole alignment was off waking up. Dreading that this would be my new sleeping position for the next several weeks, I desperately starting looking up online to see if there was any way to alleviate potentially miserable nights. I quickly found out about pregnancy pillows, pillow wedges, and etc., that will supposedly alleviate women with a growing belly. Of course, I spent a good couple of hours consumed reading reviews and the plethora of options that are available (hello, online shopping). I heard that Snoogle is a popular choice for many women, but I couldn’t quite comprehend the price tag so went with a slightly more affordable option on Amazon. I’ve used it for about 6 weeks now and can confidently say that I love it! The one I bought is U-shaped and part of it detachable which is an added flexibility if you want to try to the C-shaped version. I went back and forth with the detachment because my body seems to prefer different shapes every night lol.

Some of the things that I love about this pillow:

  1. The cover is machine washable. Although the reviews say that it is hard to re-insert the cover after the wash, I didn’t find that to be the case. I also didn’t find the cover to be scratchy. It is a very soft jersey material.

  2. The detachable part is definitely useful! I don’t feel like the zipper gets in the way during sleeping.

  3. Plenty of cushions. It is delivered vacuum sealed so allow at least 24 hours for it to completely rise. Some reviewers complained that it didn’t have much cushion but I thought it was just enough for me.

  4. Pillow is flexible so it’s great for various positions. I particularly like it for propping myself up to read a book or working something on my laptop.

  5. Dogs and the hubby like it, too! All of them use it frequently for napping lol. Z also likes to take it out to the living room as additional back support on the couch.

A few downsides:

  1. It is HUGE. If you have a queen-sized bed like I do, it will literally take up half of the bed. My poor hubby initially felt like there was a giant wall between him and I, which saddened him (he’s a cuddler so he now cuddles the pillow lol).

  2. It is true that pillow flattens easily because you are using it every single night, and in my case, all day long by other members of the family lol. Every morning, I make it a point to fluff the pillow a little bit. Almost 2 months of use, I think it is still retaining most of its shape and cushion so I think I could comfortably rely on this all through the third trimester.

If you are expecting and following my blog, I hope you find this review to be somewhat helpful. I never thought I would need a gigantic body pillow in order to sleep comfortably, but I have certainly reached a point in this pregnancy where I can’t really sleep well without it unless I have a million of pillows that I can build a fort around myself each night (like I am now in this hotel room…).
